photos: the best of europe
not everybody has the patience to sort through 800+ photos from a family vacation, so i have distilled out about 70 of my favorites from scotland, london and paris. there is more commentary on the trip to come (UPDATED: it’s here now) but wanted to get the pictures up quicker than my weary brain can draft real blog posts.Explore the Photo Set:

Rue de Rivoli
Paris has turned out to be the big surprise for me on the trip — i thought i was going to hate it, and was only doing it to buy off my wife for spending seven days in a car running around a nation she’d already seen. And i have to say, i was partially right. Paris is an ugly, ugly city during the day — there seems to be no sanitation in the traditional sense, the people on the sidewalks aren’t terribly nice, and it was painfully obvious that I just wasn’t in Kansas anymore Toto.
But Paris at night, is just stunning.
I have a feeling we’ll be back — we didn’t get to see even half the things on our list, but when we do come i think we’re going to do another long weekend and not even going to try adapt to the time change.
We’ll just get up at noon, and stay awake until 2am, and do Paris the way that God intended — at night.

Notre Dame
friends of ours came to Paris of their honeymoon. they basically rented an apartment for two weeks, and packed a bunch of books, and just lived a normal Parisian life for two weeks (sans blackberry, i hope).i thought they were crazy — turns out they weren’t.
we ran around like tourists for the first 18 hours we were here, before we started dawdling longer and longer in the cafes around the tourist attractions than in the attractions themselves.
the cafe at Notre Dame is a great example. it’s a horrible tourist trap, and it was horribly overpriced, but sitting there drinking liquid chocolate for two hours is one of the top memories i’m taking home with me.

The Louvre
It’s nearly impossible to overstate the impact that tourists have on The Louvre. They’re everywhere, and they’re crazy. The Lady Sparker and I spent a grand total of two hours in the museum (including 45 minutes at their cafe) and ticked off most of the top 10 things you “have” to see — and then got the heck out of dodge. Beautiful museum, it just needs about 2.3 million less people in it at any one time.See Slideshow of the Photos on Flickr:

Ile de la Cite / Pont Neuf
i had such an incredible sense of déjà vu standing on Pont Neuf, a bridge from Paris’ left bank to one of the islands in the river Siene. After a second, i figured it out — the bridge is featured in the first Jason Bourne movie:Enough. 5:30 p.m. Paris. Today. Pont Neuf. You come alone, you walk to the middle of that bridge. You take off your jacket. Face east. I’ll redial this number.
I’m sure I’ve once again offended a couple centuries of cultured peoples by having this association, but (again) you can take the American out of America, but you can’t …

british beer
on the flight over here from the U.S., i gave my father two goals for his tenure in Britain — either he was going to learn to drink scotch or he was going to learn to drink beer.he chose the latter.
my father really hasn’t done much with alcohol at least since i’ve been around — there is a childhood story about mixing day old empties together which still gives me the heebs — but each meal i’d pick out something for myself that i thought he’d like, give him a sample and then he’d either order it or something he had earlier in the trip.
i have to say he’s built himself a respectable palette for the darker stuff — mostly brown ales and stouts. the effort was made a bit easier by English beer’s milder taste than it’s American microbrew cousins, but a beer is a beer and now he’s fully prepped up to tie one down at work functions and the like.
i’m so proud 🙂

Kensington Palace
Between Kensington Palace and the Tower of London, i think it’s safe to say that I’m a complete monarchist. Granted they are capricious, and constantly cutting off peoples (and more specifically, wives) heads — but God, the palaces, the histories, and the intrigue. It’s like crack. Or more importantly, it’s like the 17th century equivalent of reality TV.In fact, i’m working on my elevator pitch for a Real Housewives of Buckingham Palace as we speak.

buckingham palace
i have to give props to my now three month pregnant wife — we walked down to buckingham palace late tonight, and it’s the first thing in the entire trip that she’s opted out of for want of sleep. she’s a trooper.See All the Photos on Flickr:
Buckingham Palace, London, England -
Westminster
we’re nearing the end of the trip — just one full day left tomorrow, and then my parents fly out the following afternoon. i can already hear my parents talking over the next hundred family gatherings about how perfect the trip was (and it really did go off without a hitch) and i’m really glad to have ticked something off my things-to-do-before-i-die list and picked up some great family memories to boot.See All the Photos on Flickr:
Westminster, London, England -
Hogwarts — er, Glenfinnan
Glenfinnan is a significant blah blah blah because it’s where Bonnie Prince Charlie blah blah blah during the Jacobite uprising of blah blah blah. More importantly, it’s also the landscape on which Hogwarts Castle (and the Hogwarts Express) is digitally superimposed for the Harry Potter movies. You can take the American out of America, but you can’t …

Silver Sands of Morar
Morar is well known for it’s sanded beaches — which are a bit of a rarity up here — but also because it’s the home to Morag, Scotland’s second favorite Loch moster after Nessie. Sighting of her are a bit less welcome by the locals, however, as legend says that a member of the local clan dies each time. I’m glad Nessie is so much more benevolent.See Slideshow of the Photos on Flickr:

Armandale Castle
Given how the Donald clan is one of Scotland’s four largest, you’d think there would be a bit of an industry of places for expat MacDonalds to visit but — not so much. The one big exception is Armandale Castle on Isle of Skye, where there is a Clad Donald museum and the ruins of very late (and questionably significant) family castle.
That aside, now that we are on the Isle, it’s hard to argue with beauty of the land that surrounds us.

Inverness
Inverness was the one part of the trip that we just couldn’t really work into the plan. My mother’s Grandfather was born there, but it was so far north, not much to see, and not exactly the most scenic city of the lot.Turns out we were wrong on the first part — once we got to where we were staying in Drumnadrochit, the innkeeper listed some places in Inverness as good dinner options, and said it was just under 30 minutes away.
So we drove in for a bit — nominally to find the Old High Church, which would have almost certainly been by Great Grandfather’s Church during his lifetime. We found it eventually (after a small detour to an unmarked neighboring church) and found some MacDonalds in the cemetary.
It’s nice going off the plan every once in a while.

Loch Ness and Castle Urquhart
My father had a grand total of one request on this trip — to see Loch Ness, something i was more than happy to do based solely on my favorite roller coaster ride of all time (the Loch Ness Monster at Busch Gardens Williamsburg).Love it. Especially the part when we were sitting in Castle Urquhart’s orientation film and five minutes was dedicated to how the hated MacDonalds laid siege (like viking mercenaries!) to the beloved castle on the Loch, several times over the centuries.
I don’t remember hearing about that from my Grandmother.

Glen Coe
the mountains around Glen Coe are officially on my list of most beautiful places on the planet. there is an strange quiet and sadness that permeates the landscape, which might be why it’s (erroneously) translated as the Valley of Weeping.for those playing along at home, Glencoe is where several dozen of MacDonalds (ancestors on my maternal grandmother’s side) were killed in their own home by the guests who had accepted their hospitality, because the MacDonalds had not yet pledged their allegience to new monarchs William and Mary.
(yes, THAT William and Mary.)
it really is stunning here — so stunning, we’re going to stop again on our way back from the Isle of Skye, too.

so, a funny thing happened
so, a funny thing happened at the car dealership.i rented a car from whatever the nationwide/generic car rental place was, and the only thing i asked for was for it to be an automatic. i’ve done the wrong side of the road thing before, but had little interest in doing it on hills with a clutch.
turns out that the only automatic that they had on the lot was a Mercedes E-Class Wagon, which the guy described as being worth more than his annual paycheck (it costs $49,250 in the States).
he gave it to us for the rate we already agreed to for what we thought was going to be a crappy Scandinavian four-door, and tossed in a GPS to boot. the lady sparkler said to decline the insurance to use our own, and i drove the really expensive car off the lot like a scared little boy.
when we got back to the apartment (we’re in a two-bedroom for our stay in Edinburgh) i made my wife call our insurance, just to be sure we were okay. it went something like this:
We just rented a Mercedes wagon, and want to make sure it’s covered under our insurance.
What do you mean when you say that you don’t cover “certain” luxury vehicles — like what, Ferrari’s and Lambroghinis?
So, I started walking back to the rental place — and told him either to give us insurance or to walk over and pick the car back up himself.
Long story short, we got insurance — and my parents just got upgraded from riding around in the back of a Ford Mondeo for a week.

Lochabre
friends of my father’s gave him deed to a piece of land in Scotland for his birthday. granted, it’s only one square food but apparently that’s enough to give him the title of “Laird” within the Scottish aristocracy. it turned out to be right on our road to the Isle of Skye, so we swung by and saw his plot.See All the Photos on Flickr:

Stirling Castle
we’re on our way out west. we had one little hiccup when we hit the highway — couldn’t decide if the speed limits were in kilometers/hr or miles/hr, which makes a big difference — but at least driving on the wrong side of the road is old hat after three weeks in australia.See Slideshow of the Photos on Flickr:
Stirling Castle, Stirling, Scotland -
Holyrood
Holyrood is both Edinburgh’s Central Park and the home of the monarchy in Scotland. Besides the natural aspect, Holyrood made the list because Queen Elizabeth spends a little over a week here each summer. I’m starting to realize that i’m a bit of a Royal Watcher.See All the Photos on Flickr:
Holyrood, Edinburgh, Scotland -
Old Edinburgh
we’ve landed, taken the train up to Scotland, and have made a couple of forays into Edinburgh. my father has already struck up a rapport with the locals (well, the locals involved in the restaurant industry) and Scotland is just a beautiful as described. all is well with the world.See All the Photos on Flickr:

travel: scotland, uk
so, ended up not blogging the trip to Scotland the same way I’ve done trips in the past.this was partly because the schedule was a little too packed for much writing time, partly because I’d just fallen out of the habit of blogging daily due to the baby-talking-embargo, but mostly because the whole not-sleeping-through-the-night thing means I now spend all my sparetime asleep.
as a result, instead of my witty commentary, you are just stuck looking at the pretty pictures. suffice to say, the trip was beautiful, spectacular, and perfect in every way.
UPDATE: this turned out to not exactly be true — i’ve finally gone back and jotted down most of my thoughts about the trip, and uploaded them (along with the pictures) to the site. I’m sure i’ve missed some things, but i’ll update them as the come up in family “do you remember when” conversations.

preview: scotland
i don’t even know where to begin …ever since we got back from our honeymoon, the lady sparkler has been planning her next trip. then australia fell into our laps, and (once she got back) she began planning her next trip.
to be fair, she was actually more monitoring the currency markets than planning, per say. screw civil liberties, what really got my beloved’s blood boiling was when bush pushed the dollar sink into the commode.
so, when the bottom fell out of the european currencies last summer, the joy on her face was palpable. london. paris. wherever.
now, conveniently, my parents have always wanted to go to scotland (my grandmother was a clan donald lass) and with their 45th anniversary coming up this year and the exchange rate going our way for once, it’s was looking like this could be the year.
never one to pass up a chance to leverage synergies, the lady sparkler suggested that the two should become one. (never argue with a wife who *wants* to travel with her in-laws…)
and so it will be, the last week of this coming April.
we’ll start out with a couple days in Edinburgh (The Castle, Holyrood Park) before renting a car — more wrong side of the road driving! — and heading into the hills. we’ll do a driving tour of Glen Coe (where the noble Donalds were massacred by the dastardly Campbells while they slept).
we’ll take a drive west passing by Loch Ness (Expedition Center, Urquhart Castle) which has fascinated my father and I ever since our first trip to Busch Gardens Europe. finally, we’ll swing through the Isle of Sky — including Armadale Castle, the ancestral home of Clan Donald — before heading back in London for the trip home.
now, London is where things get interesting. we have just about 48 hours to do the whole city, including St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower of London, London Bridge, Kensington Palace, Hyde Park, Buckingham Gates, the Sherlock Holmes Museum and Parliment. and a partridge in a Pear tree.
oh, and I want to see White Hart Lane (home of Tottenham Hotspur) before the 100+ year old stadium gets torn down next year, and replaced by a 60,000-seat monstrosity.
so, my mother gets the isle of sky, my father gets loch ness, i get london, and my beloved gets … Paris?
as if the british isles weren’t enough, my beloved and I “gave each other” two days in Paris for Christmas this past year (and then gave it to ourselves again for Valentine’s Day once we realized how much it cost).
so, besides the *VERY* palpable guilt of traveling in such horrid economic climates, life is feeling pretty good.
