return from the northern kingdom

it’s the beginning of fall travel season, and we kicked it off with a trip to visit the Vermont Parkers, outside Burlington.

I’m certain we did stuff — we have pictures as proof — but mostly we kicked around and relaxed. I remember something about mini-golf (tho we didn’t keep score) and food / deck / backyard, but mostly I remember relaxing.

my iPhone is the personification (electronic-device-ification?) of *awesomeness.* I can’t believe I didn’t get one of these sooner (oh, wait. AT&T … that’s why.)

next up is Dallas for our second consecutive “wedding of the century.” it’ll be an Anglo-Dutch-Indo-Pakistani-Mexican-Middle Eastern affair, so should be fascinating.

Quick trip to Chicago over the weekend, to see our favorite (and only) groomsmaid and hang in the big city with good friends. On Sunday, Chrissy and the lady sparkler spent some serious time bonding, so i got some quality time with my camera … first real use since Australia, and Chicago certainly isn’t wanting for subjects. Great weekend the whole way round.

things have been a little hectic at the office with another huge technology project coming down the pike, so i’ve missed (or cut short) my last handful of flex days.

fortunately, no one scheduled any meetings for me this Friday, so i was able to take the day and bike down to Haines Point and back. no where near as far as my last trip, but the 83 degrees (and low humidity) certainly made up for it …

i’m getting a little bored with shooting d.c., so on this particular flex day i biked around the national mall … but i only brought the wide angle lens. some pretty interesting pictures happen when a wide lens forces you to change how you see the capital’s iconic monuments.

it’s officially the start of summer, because i start “flexing” every other friday. the deal at work is this: we still have to put in our 10 days worth of hours, but if we can do it in 9 days, we get every other friday off.

now, about 90% of me wanted to stay home, sleep, eat, play wii, etc … but with 72 degree weather, and working for an organization with “nature” in the title, it seemed like the slacking could wait until those 102 degree days in July.

so, i hopped on my bicycle, and headed up the C&O Canal Towpath that runs along the Potomac towards West Virginia. The trail head is four hilly miles from our place but, once on the path, it’s mercifully flat for the rest of the 35 mile round trip.

there really are about ten days out of the year where D.C. is the most beautiful place on earth, and i just got lucky with one of them.

We’re in Houston for Memorial Day/the lady sparkler’s Birthday, and spent last night with Nadine and Nadav at Minute Maid Park. (the lady sparkler’s parents had a prior engagement to see Pink Martini.) Great park, great game … which Houston won 4-3 by gunning down the tying run at home plate, with the bases loaded, for the final out.

Speaking of sports, i just read a story out of Washington State where a senior softball player in her final game blew her ACL after hitting a home run, and was carried around the bases by the opposing team. Incredible. I cried like a baby.

Speaking of crying like a baby, the only other time i’ve gotten misty during SportsCenter was a segment about an autistic teen who scored 20 points off the bench in the first and only basketball game of his high school career. (turns out that segment was nominated for an Emmy, so i wasn’t the only one bawling, fwiw.)

i have to lead with the panda-porn, well, just because … but this is actually only the third best thing we saw while we soaked up spring in our backyard (a.k.a. the national zoo).

in second place, we saw a river otter do 50+ flip turns in the five minutes we were watching. he just kept going and going. i’m thinking maybe we need to put in for a bigger pool for him … maybe something Olympic sized.

the pièce de résistance was seeing an orangutan actually use the so-called “o-line” around and above the Zoo. now, i have been coming here rather steadily since moving to D.C. eleven years ago, but i have never seen any animal actually using those cables they have strung above the sidewalks near the ape house. today? there they were … and they even dropped poo on the tourists.

truly, a perfect day.
