lessons learned
with great power comes great responsibility, and sparklet’s new found power of walking are starting to have great impacts — to her cranium.in the last twenty four hours, she has walked into two walls, collided into both the bed and the crib at full ramming speed, and fallen over about a dozen times.
this afternoon, she did a full double gainer into the pool and then tried to breathe underwater — neither of which turned out well.
(i’d give the flip a 4.2, but there was a discernable splash when she entered the water…)
in semi-related news, she invented a new game today — called “toss mommy’s shoes into the pool.” she clearly thought it was the best game ever. so did mommmy.
so did i — until she started to reach for my stuff.

francis public pool
i’ve got to say that dc public pools are nothing like what i’d imagined — though given the state of some dc public school buildings, what i was expecting was a pretty low bar.there were maybe 25 people at the pool at 4pm on a Sunday, mostly parents with children.
oddly enough, lots of international types who weren’t speaking the English so good — but no hordes of unattended kids whose parents had dumped them at the pool 8 hours earlier.
the kiddy pool was gi-normous (15′ x 30’ish) and sloped like a beach from inches to about two feet deep.
don’t get me wrong — the pool wasn’t gleaming (i wouldn’t put sparklet down on the floor of the shower room) but it was certainly no worse than the neighborhood pool where i grew up.
and, for DC, that’s pretty outstanding.

sparklet swimming was great and all, but maggie the swimming dog was the sub-plot that stole the show … even for our beloved protagonist. -
swim hair
sparklet has two days of swimming under her rather stylish two-piece bikini (and mostly matching hat) now, and she seems to be getting the basics.on day one, when she got tired, she’d put her face down on the carpet … only to find that the carpet was liquid and made it sorta hard to breathe.
by day two, she was putting her face down on purpose, trying to lick the water. i’m pretty sure this is a step forward, unless we’ve just gotten her addicted to clorine.
oh, and check out that faux-hawk head of hair. it’s not much, but mom is SUPER excited.

we’ve put out an all points bulletin for “un pato de juguete de color naranja y blanco, con rayas como una cebra” but given the complexity of the request, we’re fearing the worst.
good-night, sweet pato — may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.
