Travel: New River Gorge, West Virginia
Two hikes around the New River Gorge. The weather was pretty hot and hazy, so the pictures sadly aren’t much to look at. hiked two trails — Tunnel and Castle Rock Trails and the Long Point Trail. -
Travel: Bluestone State Park, West Virginia
Summer vacation at one of my favorite places, Bluestone State Park. I’ve been coming just about ever-other year since 8th Grade, and it never gets old. Cheap too … something like $350 for a week-long cabin rental. hiked the River Trail.Bluestone State Park

Liz Phair @ The Birchmere
truth in disclosure — i’m typing this in october of 2009, because i went back to look up the set list that Liz Phair played and saw that i never blogged down anything about the show.Liz was touring small venues in support of her yet to be released new album (Somebody’s Miracle) and probably to apologize for her eponymous previous album (that I seemed to be the only person alive who was able to tolerate, though i still prefer her first three albums).
anyway, great show. light hearted, all acoustic. the lady sparkler and i (and two good friends) got the feeling that she was sleeping with her guitarist, and it turns out we were right.
the missus even finally picked up a liz phair song that she actually liked (title song from Somebody’s Miracle) which — in her mind — is good enough to make up for the first three albums.
SET LIST: Polyester Bride · Never Said · Flower · Baby Got Going · Extraordinary · Table for One · Mezmerizing · May Queen · Somebody’s Miracle · Soap Star Joe · 6’1″ · Closer To You · Explain It To Me · Everything to Me · Uncle Alvarez · Divorce Song · Supernova · F*** & Run · Why Can’t I? · Hurricane Cincy / Cyclone · H.W.C.

Travel: Kayaking the West Sound, Washington
After a morning hiking Mt. Constitution, we spent the afternoon kayaking around the West Sound off the San Juan Islands. We kayaked accross the sound to what I *think* was the unfortunately named “Victim Island.”Kayaking the West Sound, San Juan Islands, Washington State

Hike: Yellow Island Preserve, Washington
We took a day trip out to the Conservancy’s Yellow Island Preserve, a tiny island in located in the middle of the Puget Sound. Through the island’s history, an absence of grazing has helped preserve an unusual diversity of native plants, including 50 species of wildflower and bald eagles.Yellow Island Preserve, San Juan Islands, Washington State

Travel: Port Susan Bay, Washington
Part of orientation to The Nature Conservancy is a trip to an ecologically significant place, with a 4-day conservation immersion course. My trip is to the San Juan Islands in Washington’s Puget Sound. Hike: Susquahannah State Park
My favorite hike in Maryland. A couple of miles in dense vegitation before it opens up in a series of farm pastures. It always seems to rain, but that always seems to make the hike even better.Susquahannah State Park:
