drink: battle of the bloody marys
Over the last year, we’ve bounced back and forth between two bloody mary recipes. The first is something that I cobbled together online, probably from some over-spiced Emril recipe (bam!) The second is a recipe we just picked up from McGinty’s Pub in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Bastard Child of Emril Bloody Mary (serves four)
- 2 tbsp. Horseradish
- 2 tbsp. Lemon Juice
- 1 tbsp. Old Bay Seasoning
- 1 tbsp. Onion Powder
- 1 tbsp. Worchester Sauce
- 1/2 tsp. Paprika
- 1/2 tsp. White Pepper
- 1 tsp. Garlic, Diced
- 1 bottle of the Bloody Mary mix of your choice.
McGinty’s Pub (single serving)
- 1 tbsp. A-1 Sauce
- 3 dashes of Tabasco Sauce
- 1.5 oz. vodka
- 3 0z. Guinness (yes, the beer)
- 3-5 oz. of Bloody Mary mix, to taste
- fresh ground black pepper

children’s too
another trip back to children’s, this time to get a quick ultrasound of sparklet’s port wine stain.there is a statistical possibility that what we see on the cheek could actually be something else, so they goop-ed her up and took a sonogram just to be sure.
fortunately for her, the television just happened to be playing “the muppets” — once upon a time, her favorite movie — so she got to sing along with mommy, while they rubbed a ultrasound wand around her cheeks.

doug the dinosour
the mighty quinn never quite made it through daylight savings time this year. the clock ticked back from 6:30am to 5:30am, but he never reset. by the time we got back from new york, he was waking up as early as 4:45 and not going back to sleep.so we got doug.
doug the dinosaur is a lamp, on a timer. we explained to the mighty quinn that doug was his new roommate, and that we weren’t allowed to get out of bed until doug “woke up” in the morning. (this wasn’t our idea, fwiw. we stole it from friends who, in turn, paid for the advice from a sleep therapist.)
the first day we set the timer for 5:15am, and put the mighty quinn back to sleep (unconvincingly) until doug woke up about 30 minutes later. the second day we moved it back five minutes, and then ten, etc.
by day five, the timer was actually going off FIRST, at which point we just set the timer to 7:00am and called it a day. and, for a bonus, even when the mighty quinn gets up first, he plays quietly in his crib until doug’s awake.
and sanity and balance has been restored to the household.

zoolights
the mighty quinn is now officially a flight risk.for the first time for either kid, while we were eating dinner in the zoo’s snack bar, he just walked right out the front door — looking for mommy, who had taken sparklet to the bathroom about five minute earlier.
fortunately, the dad of a family who was sitting near the door saw him wander out and assumed that something wasn’t quite right.
but it’s officially the end of the innocence for the parker family.

unfortunately, the shirt has died — the elbow ripped open after months and months, and years and years of wear. it’s been replaced with not one but two more shirts with snaps, but i’m sure they will never be as loved.
rest in peace, green one with the snaps. rest in peace.
