a friend showed up today with an actual, honest-to-God film Polaroid camera. it’s quite possible that this is the first time that sparklet’s ever been captured on film — and frankly, could be her last. it’s all pretty crazy if you think about where we’ve come from in just the last ten years.

  • live: the royal wedding

[Tower of London, London, England, UK.]
why in god’s name am i awake?

i know, i know. i read vanity fair’s the royal watch alarmingly regularly, have been known to read the delicious awfulness that is the daily mail, and get more news/programming from the bbc than i do from all the american networks combined.

so, it possible that i might be a bit of an anglophile. which, i guess, is exactly why i’m awake. and, so long as i’m up, i might as well live blog this thing.

4:59 AM the lady sparkler, last night, on why she wasn’t going to get up this morning: “i love london. i love scottish whisky. i named my daughter after the bride. i think that’s enough.”
5:01 AM looks like i have about 27 channels i can watch this thing on — hello, bbc america.
5:02 AM seriously — i can’t stand NBC during the olympics, how in god’s name could suffer through an American network covering the royal wedding?
5:13 AM the token “awkward american in the crowd” they just interviewed wasn’t quite as awkward as usual — the gods are truly smiling on the moment.
5:21 AM someone appears to have planted trees in the middle of the abbey. guess i should have gotten up a bit earlier, to hear that one explained.
5:33 AM there’s a corner of the abbey where they’re putting all the people under the age of 80, right? i mean, the bride and groom have to have at least one set of friends they slipped in under strict instructions to not get plastered and start dancing on the tables …
5:38 AM in case anybody was wondering, karin vogel is officially the last person in line for the british throne. sadly, she did not get an invite.
5:48 AM the queen looks great. charles looks old. isn’t that backwards?
6:03 AM totally missed the big wedding dress reveal because the kettle just went off.
6:09 AM need to redact my previous crack on the trees in the abbey. from the ground level, it’s actually quite lovely.
6:15 AM well played, kate. well played, pippa. ease up on the gold tassles there, boys.
6:20 AM “maawidge. maawidge is wat bwings us togethaaa, today.”
    6:25 AM <sniff> i promissed myself i wouldn’t cry… </sniff>
6:33 AM they look tired — beautiful, but tired.
6:35 AM wedding sermons still make me squirm, at least those since a wedding i attended 10 years ago where the catholic priest droned on about “copulation” for 15 minutes.
6:41 AM sparklet’s awake. awake, and very confused why we’re watching something other than plaza sesamo.
6:52 AM so, are the people at the back of the church excited they actually got in the door or ticked that they’re not 35 yards farther back so the could watch it on the jumbotron in hyde park?
6:55 AM interesting, the queen doesn’t sing along to “god save the queen.” somewhat obvious in hindsight, i guess …
6:56 AM wait! how are they married if they didn’t kiss??? everything in the princess bride was a lie.
7:04 AM the lady sparkler is up. asked if the bride’s father was the one in the black suit.
7:10 AM my wife is beaming — at least until sparklet tripped, fell over, cried, dusted herself off, and started beating on her little bongo drum.
    7:16 AM lovely.
7:19 AM my arm hurts from just watching them wave.
7:21 AM the queen looks ecstatic. hard to believe how much has change in the royal outlook from even just five years ago.
7:24 AM where do they store all the carriages, limousines and flags when there aren’t any royal weddings pending? i have so many questions.
7:36 AM um, the rather uncomfortable goth chicks with the crazy hats seated behind the queen during the ceremony were the children of Fergie, ex-Duchess of York. they just can’t catch a break, can they?
7:48 AM diana had such style — but the 80s were still the 80s, and (in hindsight) her wedding dress was really just plain dreadful.
8:03 AM we need more national holidays. are either of the obama girls old enough to get married yet?
8:12 AM commentator: “as a people we’re not childish, we’re not stupid. we know we have problems. but for one day, we live in the moment where we can celebrate our past, our future, and our political stability. there is a kind of wisdom found when you suspend cynicism. it’s a different kind of knowledge, but it’s a knowledge found in the innocence of a wedding day.”
8:21 AM they keep dragging the crazy people in the costumes on tv. hey bbc, stop encouraging these people.
8:31 AM they finally kissed — whew, that would have been awkward had they missed that part.
8:32 AM i’m pretty sure one of those 5-year olds in the doormouse costumes is actually taller than the Queen.
8:35 AM wills is a lucky, lucky man — but needs to get that girl a cheeseburger, stat.
9:42 AM in such a good mood. beautiful women should marry ugly, awkward men more often.
  • walk

    ECPA20110428_7284.jpg

yesterday, sparklet walked up to me, handed me my shoes, and dragged me out the front door.we walked around the neighborhood, through the little plaza where the farmers market is each weekend, and got caught in the rain. it was a beautiful thing.

today, she said did the exact same thing — but she stopped on the way out to grab my wallet first.

  • earthday

We’re going in a different direction this year for Earth Day — with a Picnic for the Planet campaign this attempts to use healthy food to demonstrate the relevance of conservation to our daily lives.

The campaign includes an integrated mini-site, social community efforts via Facebook Events and meetup.com, outreach to chefs and food bloggers, and a series of YouTube animations.

UPDATE The effort resulted in over 600 picnics (that we know of, and we estimate we only know about 30% of them) in 60 countries around the world — number I certainly won’t kick out of bed in the morning.

  • the waiting

    []
thirty-seven days and counting — and right now that seems like a reaaaally long time.

our Memorial Day closing date was an unfortunate by-product of our buyers freaking out about us doing a “rent back” of our current place from them, and going from “unlimited flexibility” to “you have seven days to sell the place, buy a new one, and move.”

so, when they went rigid, we had to pick an arbitrary date far enough out that we were certain we could find a place to live in the meantime. a noble idea made kinda silly by us signing a contract later that weekend to buy the place on Monroe.

regardless, we have this kinda awkward four weeks in the middle here — all of our inspections and appraisals are done (so nothing left to do with the buying or the selling) but we are still five-plus weeks away from moving (so it’s a little early to pack).

    and so we wait.

  • out with the boyfriend

    []
    []
after nine months of romance, sparklet’s boyfriend is leaving her — following his parents to north carolina at the end of may.

sparklet’s PR people haven’t yet issued a statement on the relationship’s demise, but according to one insider their relationship has become “stormier” since news of the break was made public.

never one to waste time, sparklet has already been seen with a new beau whom she has nicknamed el español picante (which is loosely translated as “the steamy Spaniard.”)

stay tuned for more news in early June.

  • sleep

    []
i don’t want to jinx anything, but i think sparklet’s starting to figure out the whole sleeping thing.

these last couple of nights we’ve been able to leave the room while she’s still awake, and she’ll settle herself down.

there is still a bit of a process — she has to have her three sleeping buddies (tiger, kitty and puppy) and we’re obviously still doing three or four books before hand (and a full bottle).

but, when we’re done and walk out, we get just a little bit of a wimper and then nary a sound until three minutes later when snoring starts pouring through the monitor.

  • waiting

    []
we’ve been going to Dr. Robert Silverman, MD (Pediatric Dermatology in Fairfax, VA) since last year to get sparklet’s port wine stain treated.

for of our three appointments so far, we’ve sat in the waiting room for a collective four and a half hours because — wait for it — they can’t turn the laser on while other appointments happening or the building’s electrical system will collapse.

it seems to me there are a couple of options here: (a) don’t offer the treatment, (b) slap your landlord around a bit and make him solve the problem, (c) move, or (d) don’t schedule multiple appointments when you know one is a laser treatment.

but, Dr. Robert Silverman, MD (Pediatric Dermatology in Fairfax, VA) has just chosen an intriguing “fifth” way — he’s told his staff to no longer process insurance claims for the treatment, so now we’d have to pay in cash and work with the insurance company ourselves.

i’m guessing this is his effort to drive down demand.

needless to say, we’ve already started looking for other treatment options. as exciting as the long slog to Fairfax is, it just doesn’t seem worth the trouble.

  • dear america

    []
    happy tax day, america!

just a friendly reminder that your friendly neighbors here in Washington, DC pay all the taxes you do, get federal bureaucrats / international ambassadors / presidential motorcades clogging up our roads, and get to welcome your tour groups / protests / elected officials to our little town each spring and summer (and fall, and winter) — all without voting representation in the process you all seem to deride so much.

(i’m not great with history, but i hear wars have broken out over just this sort of thing.)

so, while the rest of the country is basking in the warm glow of a recently passed federal budget — DC is once again being told how to spend it’s money by a bunch of outsiders who use our city’s name as a kind of expletive to describe everything that is wrong with the planet.

for the record, we don’t mind (necessarily) doing our part for democracy and taking one for the team. we’d just like to be able to vote against it.

    especially the shakira video.

  • tradition

we don’t have a lot that passes as family traditions — my father cooking great breakfasts, his menu for thanksgiving/christmas dinner.

somehow a small wooden rocking chair has lasted through the decades of our tushies to be featured in three generations worth of 18 month birthday photos.

that’s gramma on the top right, and it’s been 65 years (almost to the day) between her picture and the one we took today with sparklet.

    amazing.

  • “daddy, i can do it”

    []
just because she isn’t talking, doesn’t mean she isn’t communicating.even though her only legitimate word remains “up” she can somehow very clearly communicate that she’s not a little girl anymore and should be allowed to push her own stroller (up hill, for three to four blocks), push her own tricycle, and now carry her own groceries.

oh, and work the remote. and the computer. and get in and out of desk chairs, pushing them back when they’re done. and she’s even starting to try and wipe her own bottom.

and while all of this is great — really, i swear — next week is sparklet’s 18 month checkup, and friends tipped us off that the doctor would be looking for evidence of a 5 to 22 word vocabulary.

here’s what sparklet’s mommy has been rehearsing:

    • sparklet’s got baby sign language down for “more”, “all done”, and “juice”.
    • she’ll randomly pick up one of our phones and bark like a seal into it — something approximaiting “ai!”
    • she’s seriously comprehending in two languages. we can say “give that to me,” “put this in the trash” and “where’s your shoes/ball/socks” in both English and Spanish, and sparklet knows/acts on exactly what we’re saying.
    • her first word (“up”) isn’t an object, but a concept — and she knows the different usages between “pick me up and carry me”, “you get up off the couch”, and “put me onto the bed” or “i want into the crib.”

so, while all that’s keeping me from committing “i’m an aweful parent” hari kari, i’ve conveniently double-booked myself during her appointment and won’t be able to join the family for that particular festivity.

UPDATE: sparklet had her 18 month appt. and is still as impressive as ever — he’s 30 lbs. and 34 inches, both puts her above the 97% threshold.

the pediatrician did NOT yell at us about her vocabulary (for all the reason’s above), but said if sparklet doesn’t have 10 words by 21 months, we should probably think about getting a professional to help her jump start the language process.

  • inspection for monroe

despite being 97 years young, our home-elect is in pretty outstanding shape.

we spent three hours pouring over the place on Saturday, and really didn’t come up with nearly as much as we would have thought.

there was a loose toilet on the first floor which we didn’t want to start leaking, a couple small electrical issues and a joist which showed some possible termite damage — all of which the sellers agreed to fix.

there are some other issues which we’ll want to fix ourselves in the months after we move in: the boiler was installed in 1982, and probably is a little behind as far as fuel efficiency goes; the attic could use a little more insulation; and there are two code issues with railings on the porch and on the steps to the basement.

the first two will take some planning (and some $$$$) but the latter i can fix myself on pretty much any random Saturday afternoon.

oh, and even our termite fears turned out to be over blown. the porch next door does have a small termite issue, but “our” porch has been treated and got a clean bill of health — and they were actually replacing the offending porch during our inspection.

i think we’ve got one contingency left (our appraisal) but the last week of May seems a lot closer than it did even a couple of days ago.

MAP: From Baist’s Real Estate Atlas of Surveys of Washington, District of Columbia, circa 1919. “Our” place is #79, located just above the “M” in Monroe Street.

  • missed the cherry blossoms

    []
not sure what the heck we were doing, but we completely flaked on the cherry blossoms this year.

mount pleasant is a lot of things, but “hot bed of Yoshino cherry trees” is sadly not one of them — though i guess that means it’s also not a “hot bed of tourists in ugly shorts jacked up to their necks.”

you win some, you lose some.

  • birds

    []
sparklet has developed a love of birds. she can follow them in the sky, in the trees and on the ground — and does the baby sign-language for “more” when they fly away. cute.
