you suck, montgomery county
just got a “notice of delinquent parking ticket” in the mail from montgomery county, maryland for parking at an expired meter on november 12th at 5:17pm.there are a couple of problems with this scenario:
- we never got the original notice of the parking violation for which we are now “delinquent.”
- i wasn’t in montgomery county that day — twelve minutes before our “violation,” i took these pictures of kate at our home in mount pleasant and proceeded to upload them to flickr four minutes *after* our violation.
- my wife wasn’t in montgomery county that day — thirty minutes after our “violation,” the lady sparkler stopped by pupusaria san miguel on her way home from work (for the best latin food in D.C., incidentally).
- the “infraction” occurred on a federal holiday (Veteran’s Day) when parking restrictions don’t apply.
- the citation *does not* list a make or model, so there is no confirmation that it was our car and not just a typo of our license plate.
however, the only recourse Montgomery County provides is to appear — in person — before the 6th District Court in Rockville.
given the cost of the ticket (at least in relation to my wife’s billing rate) and the distance between my work and the courthouse (55 minutes in decent traffic) there is no way in h-e-double-hockey-sticks that we’re going to contest the citation.
you suck, montgomery county — yet another reason i’m never moving to the suburbs.

¡el pato is back!
el pato rides again.after being missing and presumed dead for the last week, el pato seems to have dragged himself all the way from costa rica to an amazon.com distribution center in campbellsville, kentucky where he (rather intelligently if you ask me) UPS’ed himself the rest of the way to D.C.
amazing.
he also appears to have brought his girlfriend along with him — her name is Tica, which also happens to be the friendly, national diminutive for Costa Rican females.
… which, i guess, explains what he was doing for the last week.

’tis the season for cubicle decorations
i love my co-workers.my team is the only group on our floor that’s decorated their cubes this year — and once again we’ve totally out done ourselves. the theme this year was “white trash” and i think i can safely say that
we knocked it out of the parkwe’re just plain awesome. -
welcome back
i’m not necessarily looking for sympathy, having just gotten back from 10 days in costa rica. that said, i feel obligated to point out that less than 36 hours ago we were in flip flops and bathing suits in 89 degree weather. right now, it’s snowing and 26 degrees. oy.See Slideshow of the Photos on Flickr:

I finally got around to taking pictures of the resort on the morning we left, which just happened to be the only overcast day during our stay at the beach. There are days where the photos look better than the reality, and days where reality looks better than the photos. This was definitely a case of the latter.

table service
The hospitality in Costa Rica has been incredible. We’ve eaten dinner out every night, and each time the Ticos have gone out of their way for sparklet — from meals off the menu, to special accommodations, to near constant attention.
In fact, we’re pretty sure that sparklet’s going to want to bring at least one of the waiters home. Oh, and one of the hostesses too if there’s room (the one named Katherine, appropriately enough).
While she’s been down here, Sparklet’s developed a couple of quirks at the dinner table.
She’ll pass objects around the table, in a very prescribed order and will forcibly intervene if (a) we mess it up, or (b) if she’s ready for the object to move in a different direction.
During dinner, if mommy and I hold hands, she’ll pull them apart and insert her own. Then she spend a few minutes rearranging all six hands — including her own — in different orders and positions.
And, when she’s done eating, she insists on feeding us whatever is left — even if it has already been chewed.
It’s been a good vacation.

sprinklers
This morning, sparklet awoke to find the grounds crew experimenting with the sprinklers out front of our unit.Ever the willing helper, she marched out the front door, inspected the sprinklers heads, and then stood over the controls until the ground crew came over to show her the ropes.
And then, like all good grounds keepers, she cried when the sprinklers shut off without her direct authorization.

Is there a Wedding Photographer in the House?
Steph and Jorge’s wedding photographer is going to be a no show tonight — so it looks like I’m going to “get” to shoot my first wedding. The maid of honor (not ours, but theirs) mentioned it in passing to the lady sparkler and my beloved volunteered me for the job — not that I wouldn’t have offered myself, but it’s awesome that my bride came up to me at the pool bar and said:
Hey, I just told someone you could be the wedding photographer tonight — hope that’s okay.
UPDATE: I’ve collected my thoughts and all my gear, and i’m actually feeling pretty legit — I’ve got the same camera a wedding photographer friend of mine uses for her weddings, four memory cards which can hold about 1200 photos, two batteries, and two pretty serious-grade lenses (both normal, and wide angle).
That said, I’m seriously freaking out shot two things — well, three actually: 1) I’m shooting a wedding; 2) I’m going to blow through 1200 photos before the reception even starts which means I’m going to have to empty memory cards onto my computer while I’m still shooting and my laptop doesn’t have a battery; 3) I don’t have a legitimate flash, so shooting the outdoors-afterdark reception is going to suck something fierce.
UPDATE 2: The “shoot” is over, and I have to say that wasn’t nearly as stressful as I thought it would be — though through no part of my own:
- one of the bridesmaides had a professional grade flash (not to mention my exact same camera) which is the only reason we have photos from the reception.
- that same bridesmaid was able to shoot the bride getting ready, so we got pictures from both halves of the preparations without it getting awkward or me being on two places at once.
- friends jumped in several times throughout the night, dumping photos onto the computer and picking the camera themselves. and at one point we had amassed enough equipment that we had all three of us all shooting at once.
- the bride and the groom were both incredibly flexible and were eager to line up the shots themselves, so all we had to do was point and shoot.
I haven’t run through them all yet, but between the four of us we amassed over 3,000 pictures, and they all look pretty good considering.
I promised the couple I would post everything by Christmas, but here are a few of the ceremony in the meantime.

cougar
sparklet had developed a bit of a reputation down here, specifically when it comes to younger men. She’s taken a special shine to one of the bride’s cousins — a man half her age — and hasn’t been shy about showering him with rather physical displays of affection.
UPDATE: I thought they had something, he left town it the morning without so much as a word — only a secondhand goodbye through a despondent mother of the bride. typical.

when pizote attack
this might be our last blog post ever.our positions, on the patio of our villa, were overrun at 10:41 am local time. we kept the pizote out of the interior — sparklet was napping inside — but we weren’t able to hold the perimeter against the pizote’s vastly superior numbers.
UPDATE: nevermind. turns out they were just anti-revolution demonstrators, only interested in protesting our efforts to free cuba. once they knocked over our drinks, they moved on — it’s all good.
UPDATE 2: the pizote came back through for a mopping up operation early on our departure day, but we had no revolutionary drinks to topple so they just ran right on by.

blog hands
sparklet’s picked up this new party trick while we’ve been in costa rica — she now takes mommy and daddy’s hands and moving them around.at dinner tonight, she spent 10 minutes stacking and restacking our hands. sometimes her hand would be in the middle, sometimes on top or on bottom.
at night, when we’re putting her to bed, if our hands come off the small of her back too quick, she’ll reach behind and slap them back into place.
well, she’s a girl who knows what she wants …

cuba libre
we thought we were just drinking rum and cokes — a habit we picked up in belize — but according to the costa ricans we are actually drinking what’s called a “cuba libre”.of course, i don’t know who exactly we are freeing cuba from — Fulgencio Batista or Fidel Castro — but i am happy to say that we’ve been doing everything we can to bring libre to cuba.
just another dozen or two more and cuba should finally be safe for democracy.

parents of the year
at dinner tonight, the waitress came running up to us:excuse me! excuse me! nuestros cuchillos muy afilados!
we look down at sparklet, and she is knawing on a set of cutlery wrapped up in a napkin, which is a relatively normal part of her dining routine.
we were just about to say, “oh that’s okay” when we noticed instead of the usual table knife (the ones that can’t cut butter) she was gnawing on a steak knife.
frankly, i’m surprised that the waitress didn’t call the costa rican version of Child Protective Services.
she watched us let sparklet eat a steak knife, spoil her dinner with a blackberry smoothy, and adhere loosely to our version of the “five second” rule (which really works out to be more of a “minute and a half” rule).
not our finest moments — but also sadly not our first.
this morning on the trail to arenal, we had three separate groups of people stop us to “let us know” that sparklet was chewing on a stick (yeah, we knew).
to make matters worse, perhaps you’ve noticed a new gash on sparklet’s head from a couple of days ago? yup, she ran into a wall in our hotel room.
there’s also a (less noticable) bruise under her chin, which she got when she tripped over her own feet and landed chin first on the tile floor. oh, and when she fell she bit her lip, so that’s been bleeding on and off, too.
and then, of course, there was that double gainer off the deck into the pool.
come to think of it, maybe i should call CPS myself.

hike: parque nacional volcon arenal, costa rica
we are lucky people.putting aside the fact that we can afford to come to costa rica, that we both work with such awesome people that we can just dissappear for 10 days during the run up to year end, and that we have a (mostly) happy, healthy and charming little girl …
… during the roughly 108 hours that we’ve been in Arenal, we’ve been able to see the very top of the volcano for exactly six hours — and three of those hours happend to be when we were hiking around the base of the volcano.
i don’t want to run the statistical odd of this ever happening again, but i do feel like i should buy a lottery ticket.
the main hike in the parque is about 2km from the primary parking lot to a (now fully cooled) lava flow from the 1993 eruption, which goes through a whole series of overlooks of both the volcano and the lake beneath.
we knew nothing about how strenuous the hike was, but started feeling good when we saw two Russian grandmothers hobbling off the mountain as we made our way to the trail head.
sparklet was a happy (and well fed) camper in throughout — and even hiked a bit herself on the way back.
she’s a good egg.

rain day
the weather channel says it’s not raining outside right now, but i’m afraid that it is. accuweather says it’s rained this morning, but would stop before breakfast, but i’m afraid it hasn’t.the costa rican weather service says it’s going to rain, but gives out it’s forcasts by thirds of the country — which is a bit like saying that it’s going to rain somewhere between michigan and maine today.
all of this appears to have made the costa ricans into weather philosophers. when we asked for the weather outlook, the nice young lady at the front desk said:
it looks rainy today, but it was beautiful yesterday. it could be beautiful tomorrow, too. who can say?
awesome.

lessons learned
with great power comes great responsibility, and sparklet’s new found power of walking are starting to have great impacts — to her cranium.in the last twenty four hours, she has walked into two walls, collided into both the bed and the crib at full ramming speed, and fallen over about a dozen times.
this afternoon, she did a full double gainer into the pool and then tried to breathe underwater — neither of which turned out well.
(i’d give the flip a 4.2, but there was a discernable splash when she entered the water…)
in semi-related news, she invented a new game today — called “toss mommy’s shoes into the pool.” she clearly thought it was the best game ever. so did mommmy.
so did i — until she started to reach for my stuff.

travel: arenal, costa rica
holy crap, we’re in costa rica.i don’t think the lady sparkler or i really thought we were leaving the country until we landed in costa rica, looked around and saw a whole bunch of costa ricans.
even then, only the temperature — 80 degrees, sunny — made me think that we weren’t just in some undiscovered part of our neighborhood in d.c.
sparklet’s been quite the trooper during our day of travel. a three hour flight to miami, a two hour layover, a three hour flight to costa rica, and then a three hour car ride to arenal — all without anything approximating a meltdown.
we rented a big honking land-rover-type monstrosity, which i was thinking was a comical level of overkill on the part of my beautiful wife, untill we drove through half a dozen landslides in the last 20 km to the hotel.

found: ominous sign
it’s 4:15 am. we’re leaving for costa rica in a couple of minutes. in the “you are here” text directly under it’s clock, my phone is telling we are in the Orlovskaya region, a small oblast in southwest Russia.even my phone thinks it’s way too early in the morning to up.
UPDATE: I left my phone on the flight from DC to Miami, and didn’t realize it until I was 40 gates away. I ran back, tried to get about a half dozen people to help, and finally got on the plane with AA’s Miami operations manager. No phone. The Russian this morning really *was* a bad omen.
UPDATE 2: I’m sitting on the flight to Costa Rica, and who to my wondering eyes do I see — but my new friend the American Airlines Miami operations manager. With my phone. She said it was in the overhead compartment of the earlier flight (which is funny, because I never was) and gave me a little eyes-down-nose-over-spectacles astonishment to be more careful with my belongings. And, that’s okay by me because it looks like she might be right.
UPDATE 3: It’s the layover of return trip to DCA now, and I’ve still got my phone — but I just left my wallet, camera and computer unattended for 10 minutes next to an ATM I had attempted to use. In semi-related news, it’s increasingly hard for me to believe that there is no competency test before you’re allowed to reproduce.

anniversary
it’s our second consecutive year celebrating our October wedding anniversary during the first week of December.so, we’ve now officially celebrated our anniversary in December more than we’ve celebrated it in October. we talked about just “moving” our anniversary to December, but i’m a little nervous that’d mean we wouldn’t actually celebrate it until February.
we had a late dinner at georgia brown’s (which made me realize i’ve was selling it short as “just a brunch place”) followed by drinks at the willard (we were cold, it was warm) and then dessert back in our neighborhood (the heights).
conversation was exactly what you’d expect — the baby we left at home, where we should go on vacation next year, TSA screening regulations, the desintigration of party unity on Capitol Hill, the rise of hyperpartisanship and it’s impact on the american psyche — you know, the usual stuff.
yup.
