Trip to Chicago for NTEN 2005. Got out a couple of times to take pictures of a very cold, dark city.

Photos: The Gates
At the last minute, I got invited to see Wicked in NYC. The performance happened to coincide with the close of The Gates in Central Park (by that guy who seems to have made a career out of wrapping things). Ran out of the show, which was about 6 blocks south, and managed to get some shots before dark. The Gates, New York City:

Wandered around the zoo for a few hours. While it was unseasonably warm, it was still much too cold to be out there without some sort of natural fur coating.National Zoo:

Some friends came up from Texas for the Bush 2.1 inauguration. Couldn’t let the man be swarn in without rubbing it in the hippie’s face…Inauguration Day:

Hike: Jeremy’s Run, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia
Did a quick overnight hike off Skyline Drive.Got a late start, was hiking until after duck, and spent a miserable night on the side of a mountain because I actually listened to the park ranger when they said that camping was prohibited next to trails and near water.
The very next morning I passed no less than half a dozen campsites within 4 feet of the trail and 2 feet of the water.
I topped off my four hours of fitful sleeping with a hike back, a collapse at the elkwallow wayside, the best grilled cheese i’ve ever had in my life, and a three hour nap in my car.
i’m getting too old for this sort of thing.
