firsts: direct mail from the Conservancy
baby sparklet got her first piece of direct mail from the nature conservancy. not sure if she got it because her uncle/aunt/cousins adopted an acre for her, or if i just used her information as some kind of test.either way, i’m feeling a perverse kind of proud right now.

brownies
a family friend is running in the boston marathon this weekend. in honor, baby sparklet and i made brownies — from scratch — to bring in for a little sending-off shindig.besides making brownies that were ridiculously good — and great looking, too — sparklet’s favorite part was spraying a ziplock bag of sugar around the kitchen.
so, while the lady sparkler wasn’t involved with the actual baking, she was able to participate over the next twenty-four hours by picking grains of sugar off our kitchen appliances.

firsts: soccer ball
baby sparklet got her first soccer ball today, even though it was of the foamy, nerfy, squishy kind.she also got a toddler-sized D.C. United jersey a couple days ago (for my birthday) and we’ve got a trip to RFK on the books for the first weekend in may … i’m not sure when the next trip to north london will be, sadly.
anyway, if today is any indication, she’ll be a good keeper — so long as she’s allowed to lick the ball after each save.
actually, i’m gunning for a solid central defender. she’s 90th percentile on height, so is already built to make opposing strikers ask permission before approaching the goal.

firsts: baby food
i’m uploading these photos in September, over five months and a week after they were taken.why? well, i just found them. apparently, i thought that the event — sparklet eating her first baby food, sweet potatoes — was important enough to use the “big” camera, instead of the crappy point and shoot we usually use.
unfortunately, it took the lady sparkler absconding with the crappy camera — and sparklet then falling into her toy box — for me to be roused to find the “big” camera again, and discover the long lost photos.
whoops.

rollover minutes
baby sparklet has developed all sorts of new tricks lately.she’s got this neat one where she rolls her lower lip, draws her face down impossibly far, and then begins to wail uncontrollably … until you feed her, of course, and then it’s all better.
up until this morning, her new favorite one was waking up at 4am because she’d rolled half-way over, gotten stuck, and needed mommy or daddy to come flip her back. that ended this morning when she rolled half-way over, got stuck, and then decided “meh?” and went back to sleep.
keep moving forward, sparklet. keep moving forward.

firsts: rice cereal
baby sparklet took her first shot at rice cereal today, and wasn’t terribly impressed.we gave it a go, because she’s been judiciously, scientifically monitoring the lady sparkler and i as we eat — like dog scientists studying the doorknob principle — that it starting to get uncomfortable. we were both ready for her to stand up, walk over, and slap us silly for not sharing.
more to come …

belated valentine’s, pt 2
we made it to ben’s for lunch, so we are up to five out of the last seven valentine’s days … though this is (obviously) the first for sparklet.we actually tried to go yesterday — a saturday at ~5:00pm — but the place was packed out the door. turns out the trick is to go on sunday morning at 11am. apparently, ben’s is pre-hangover food, not post-hangover food … i guess it makes sense when you think it through.
